About the Sasol Solar Challenge

The Sasol Solar Challenge harnesses the power of sunlight, which South Africa has in abundance, to bring eager young minds and innovative individuals together with a common goal – to finish the 5,400km journey in poll position.

Held in South Africa every two years, in collaboration with Motorsport South Africa and the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the challenge is an impressive demonstration of leading technology and the sophistication and performance of solar powered vehicles.

The Aim of the Sasol Solar Challenge

The Sasol Solar Challenge is an eye-opening, educational journey, offering teams (made up of scholars, students, various industry and government partners, as well as private individuals) a hands-on way to learn about science, innovation, teamwork and business principles.

With opportunities for the public to interact with the vehicles en route, the Sasol Solar Challenge serves as a platform to catalyse learners to consider careers in science and engineering, serving as a practical and engaging application of maths, science and technology, exposing learners and students to the challenges and excitement of engineering.
