Think Bike Marshals keeping Sasol Solar Challenge Cars Safe

Think Bike Marshals will be ensuring that all participants are safe on the road when they “take the long way down” from Pretoria to Stellenbosch in the 2018 Sasol Solar Challenge.

The Sasol Solar Challenge is a biennial competition with teams from across the world designing and building solar-powered cars to drive across South Africa in an eight-day event. The journey starts in Pretoria on 22 September, and the teams will compete to cover the most distance, following a set route each day. It takes good engineering, great drivers and a team that manages energy, the weather and the routes well. The many returning teams will be aiming to break the 2016 record of more than 4,717 kms. Combined, the convoys are expected to cover more than 30,000 kms using only the sun’s power.

The finish line is in Stellenbosch and Think Bike Marshals will once again be escorting the solar cars along the way to ensure that all participants are safe on the roads and that traffic disruption is kept at an absolute minimum. Think Bike Marshals are all volunteers who have joined the Marshals for a variety of personal reasons – the most common being a belief that too many people (particularly cyclists and motorcyclists) die on our roads daily. This is our way of "putting something back into motorcycling and road safety" according to Think Bike Head Marshal Jadd Harding adding that “we are honoured to be associated with the Sasol Solar Challenge”.
