The North-West University team consists hails from the Faculty of Engineering on the Potchefstroom Campus of South Africa’s North-West University.
Following their success in the South African Sasol Solar Challenge in 2012, the North-West University team decided to build an internationally competitive FIA Olympia class solar car for the 2014 South African Sasol Solar Challenge.
Claims to fame
The North-West University entered their first solar car in the Sasol Solar Challenge 2012 and competed with great success, winning several prizes, including National and International longest total distance (Olympia class), National longest distance in one day (178km), the Safety award and Team Spirit award. They were further awarded joint event winners with the world champions, Tokai University from Japan. As a result of the NWU Solar Team’s performance in the Sasol Solar Challenge, they received the FIA Alternative Energies Cup for research groups in 2012, shared with the Tokai University in Japan.
