About Team

Genuine JV is proud to be the only high school team competing in the 2026 Sasol Solar Challenge. Representing the next generation of South African engineering, our team brings together teachers, students, and parents to build a competitive solar-powered vehicle from scratch. Our main goal is to prove that high schoolers can complete a one-hundred percent solar drive all the way to Cape Town, using every single kilometer on the road as a moving classroom. We focus heavily on the learning process, using a structured peer-to-peer mentoring setup to ensure all our technical skills and engineering knowledge are passed down to younger students each year.

About Vehicle

The Volwagen 2 is the proud second-generation solar car built by our high school team, following our original Voltwagen 1 project completed in 2022. Marking the second time Volwagen 2 will compete in the Sasol Solar Challenge, this vehicle represents a massive leap forward in performance and optimization based on our past racing data. It features a lightweight aerodynamic body optimized to reduce wind drag, a custom-made battery pack built entirely by the team for peak efficiency, and a student-designed custom pneumatic system for safe vehicle power-ups and emergency shutdowns. Equipped with a student-built telemetry monitoring dashboard to track live solar and battery data, Volwagen 2 is fully optimized to achieve a 100% solar drive all the way to Cape Town.

Why We Race

We are racing to complete the entire long-distance drive to Cape Town using nothing but solar power. Our big goal is to break our high school team’s previous driving records along the way. This long race is like a huge, moving classroom where we write down every strategy and fix we make. By keeping these clear records, we make sure that older students can easily pass down all their knowledge and technical skills to the younger students coming into the team.

  • Validate Student-Led Engineering Innovation: Demonstrate that a meticulously organized secondary-level institution can safely and successfully execute a high-tier renewable energy logistics project alongside university and professional teams
